I think we can all agree that we live in a new age.
Times have changed and things are way different from how they were years ago.
Today’s world is full of technology and we are always on the internet.
For most of us, that’s where a good part of our daily lives take place.
So, let’s go over the way we make first impressions in today’s digital world.
We meet new people and communicate through social media, email, text messages, and video conferencing.
It’s a great thing and thanks to all this fairly new technology, the world has grown closer together.
It has become so easy to meet people from across the country or even across the world!
And this new way is known as the digital age.
First impressions are now made through an email or on social media.
It’s no longer made by meeting in person.
So, the rules of first impressions have definitely changed.
Now, there are some old rules that still apply.
Things like being polite and thinking before we speak or write.
But, there are a lot of other things to keep in mind when it comes to making first impressions on the web.
So, let’s take a look. Shall we?
First Impressions with Email
Email may often be the way you make a lot of your first impressions in a digital world.
No matter whether it’s a client or a prospect, you want it to go well.
Even though the rules are different, you will still want to make a good first impression.
This can easily be the perfect way to do that.
With an email, you have time to think about what you want to say.
You can polish and edit until it’s just right.
So, here are a couple of things to help you be able to do just that.
First off you will want to make sure you are using an appropriate tone.
This will determine what salutation you use, your wording, and how you close.
You want to think about the relationship you have with the person receiving the email.
And then you want to choose appropriately.
If you need some help writing a formal email, you can try Google.
You’ll find plenty of great suggestions to get you started.
Pick one that you feel most comfortable with. Use it as a basis to help you build your own.
Take your time when editing and writing your first ones.
After a while, you will build confidence and feel more comfortable writing them.
Now, the second thing is going to be to check your spelling.
This can go a long way towards making a good first impression.
It’s very easy to make a mistake and miss it.
And you don’t want a professional email going out with a bunch of spelling errors.
That will leave you looking inexperienced. We don’t want to come across like that!
So, make sure that you go back and give your message a quick edit and spell check before hitting that send button.

First Impressions in Social Media
Now the next way we make a lot of first impressions in today’s digital world is through social media or a website.
This one can be a little more tricky though. You never know when a first impression can happen.
Because you don’t know which post or profile someone may come across.
And you don’t want every single post to be first impression worthy.
That just takes all the fun out of social media.
Just make sure that you are aware while writing a post. Try not to make any that are too embarrassing.
You want people to be able to see the real you.
But, you want to try and keep things more professional as well.
People see your online properties.
They read about you and look at your images.
And use them to decide whether or not they want to reach out to you.
Make these first impressions count.
Stay up to date
It’s also a good thing to keep your profiles up to date.
And if you have a website, keep it up to date as well.
You don’t want someone to decide to contact you, only to find a dead link or send an email to an address you no longer check. I’m sure we all have some of those.
So, it’s a good idea to keep a check on things.
Go back and check that your descriptions are still accurate on social media sites.
Sometimes, we change things up a bit and certain things may not fit anymore.
Just don’t forget to change it across all platforms when this happens.
Also, make sure you have a current profile picture of yourself on them.
I know some of you may have chosen to use your logo. Maybe you think that it looks more professional.
But, it’s actually good to let others know that you are a real person.
This can also help them build trust with you.
And finally, we have video conferencing.
This is using things like Skype, for example.
And it’s the closest you can come to an actual in-person meeting on the internet.
Now, this one has a lot of the same rules.
You want to make sure that you have a good appearance and use good body language.
Avoid Technical Difficulties
Make sure you do all you can to avoid any technical difficulties as well.
There are a few things you can do to prepare for this.
You can check your connection ahead of time, although you’re probably always connected. I know that I am.
Another thing to do is to check your audio and video. Make sure they are working properly.
Giving your lighting a quick check won’t hurt either.
Proper lighting can be the key to looking your best.
You can also do things like rebooting your computer.
This may fix a problem before it happens.
Giving things a fresh start can fix a lot of problems you may have.
Sometimes it’s just like magic.
A simple restart will fix whatever problem you were having.
That happens to me all the time.
Take advantage of the new tools and platforms the online world has to offer.
Use them to make some new connections and lasting first impressions in today’s digital world.
